Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The focus of this seminar (to be held in English) is on the role that the arts – literature, music, painting, film – play in the prolific work of Slavoj Zizek. To be more precise, we will examine several seminal writings on literature (Kafka; James, Beckett), on music (Wagner), on painting and, finally, on film (Hitchcock; Lynch).
The seminar examines the relevance of the arts in Slavoj Zizek’s thought. The course consists of one preliminary meeting and seven seminar sessions. While the first seminar session examines his writings on Franz Kafka, the second seminar closely analyzes his longer text on Henry James, as well as several pieces on Samuel Beckett. The third seminar and the fourth seminar will address the “case of Wagner” in Zizek’s writings. Not unlike Friedrich Nietzsche, the development of and shifts in Zizek’s thought can be traced via his multiple engagements with Wagnerian art. The fifth seminar session turns to the question of modernist painting, as well as of abject art. The sixth seminar session turns to artistic scenes of subjective destitution. The last session addresses Zizek’s small book on the cinema of David Lynch.
The seminar will consist of presentations and class discussion. All texts (and artworks) to be discussed will be made available on Moodle. Participants are expected to come fully prepared, to have closely read the respective texts, and to engage in class discussion.
Office hours (by individual appointment) will be held either in person (if possible) or via video tools.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance is strictly required! Missing more than one seminar will reflect negatively on the final grade; missing more than two seminars will result in a negative grade. Active participation is expected!
To receive a grade for the seminar, two options are available:
The first option is a presentation - the length of the presentation is supposed to be 30 minutes; the presentation must be fully elaborated and submitted in written form and as email attachment to the course instructor the day before the presentation. The written form of the presentation must include a bibliographical apparatus. The written text of the presentation must have a minimum length of 10 pages (1 ½ spaces); also, presenters must provide a 1-page hand-out for all the seminar participants the day before their presentation; this hand-out is to be sent to the course instructor one day before the presentation, and the course instructor will put the hand-out on Moodle). The presentation and the hand-out must be sent in due time. The presentations should be chosen during the preliminary meeting, although participants interested in giving a presentation on the texts/topics listed can contact the instructor before the preliminary meeting.
The second option is a paper - the length of the paper must be at least 15 pages (1 ½ spaces). The paper must include a bibliographical apparatus. The citation style can be chosen by the author of the paper, but it must be consistent. The topic of the paper can be determined in consultation with the instructor.
The final grade will be determined in the following manner:
Class participation: 30 %. Presentation: 70 %
Class participation: 30 %. Final Paper: 70 %
