Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The class will read recent research contributions on emergency ethics and civil disobedience. Both subject areas are important aspects of an ethics prepared for exceptional situations in society. Whereas emergency ethics deals with particular allowances in the case of an emergency - among other in war -, civil disobedience investigates the limits of citizen protest. It is the goal of this seminar to get acquainted with recent research contributions in both areas. This also includes thorough debates of the underlying political ethics. In particular, the participants are invited to develop own approaches to both subject areas. The class will finish with a colloquium that gives occasion to provide very clear-cut cases and to apply the knowledge about one of the two subject areas.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

reading all texts and regular and active participation in class is expected;
everyone will present one text.
In addition, each student will contribute to the final colloquium with a presentation.
Finally, the seminar will be completed by a term paper (length about 15 pages).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

All tasks (presence and participation, presentation of a text, presentation in the final colloquium, term paper) must be completed to receive a positive grade.

If you miss more than one session, it needs to be justified in writing. You mustn't miss more than 3 sessions.

At least 60% are necessary for a positive grade.
the presentation of a text counts for 20%,
the presentation at the colloquium counts for 20%,
the seminar paper counts for 60%.
