180098 SE Radical French Philosophy: De Sade (2016W)

5.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 18 - Philosophie
Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

Please note: This is a course for advanced students. It will be held in English. It is not recommended for students in their first year.

If you consider participating, you are required to buy and to read the following book as soon as possible.

De Sade: Philosophy in the boudoir, or, The immoral mentors. (translated by Joachim Neugroschel; introduction Francine du Plessix Gray) London : Penguin, 2006.

Please note: This text, as well as many others written by Sade, belongs to the tradition of the radical Enlightenment. It is pornographic and highly offensive to persons with religious convictions.

The seminar will provide an exposition of some of the most important aspects of the thought of Donatien Alphonse François Marquis de Sade (1740 - 1814). It will relate Sade's radically libertine ideas about philosophy, sexuality, science, politics and religion to the historical, socio-political, and intellectual context of the enlightenment. To that aim, the seminar includes a concise introduction to the literary oeuvre of Sade, with special reference to his novels “La Philosophie dans le boudoir (1795)” and “Histoire de Juliette, ou les Prospérités du Vice (1796)”. The Seminar will outline early modern conceptualisations of new epistemologies that were going in tandem with reassessments of contemporary political and religious discourses on the human body. The seminar will also encompass Sade's reception into twentieth century art (Surrealism) philosophy (Horkheimer&Adorno, Barthes, Foucault) and feminist studies (Beauvoir, Carter).
