Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

All texts to be discussed in the seminar will be made available in form of a reader. This seminar will examine seminal texts by Slavoj Zizek. Particular emphasis will be put on Zizek’s elaboration of a novel ideology critique, on his account of virtual reality, on his approach toward cognitivism and neuroscience, on his conception of politics, on his account of violence, as well as on his interpretation of art (music).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

: In order to receive a grade for the seminar, either a presentation (30 – 35 minutes; the presentation has to be elaborated and submitted in written form to the instructor; moreover, each presenter has to provide a one-page summary of his/her presentation and distribute it at the beginning of class to all the other participants) has to be given or paper (20 pages; 1 ½ spaces) has to be written. The topic of the paper can be determined in cooperation with the instructor.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The students in the seminar will employ close readings of the texts; this seminar will also provide students with the opportunity to hone their presentation and writing skills.

Prüfungsstoff

The seminar will consist of presentations and class discussions.

The seminar participants will examine closely excerpts from the following seminal texts by Zizek: The Sublime Object of Ideology; The Plague of Fantasies; “Is It Possible to Traverse the Fantasy in Cyberspace?”; The Cartesian Theater versus the Cartesian Cogito”; The Ticklish Subject; The Parallax View; In Defense of Lost Causes; Violence; “’The Wound is Healed Only by the Spear that Smote You”: The Operatic Subject and Its Vicissitudes”; “Wagner, Anti-Semitism and ‘German Ideology’”.
Recommended Secondary Literature: Sarah Kay: Zizek; Rex Butler: Slavoj Zizek; Erik Vogt: Slavoj Zizek und die Gegenwartsphilosophie.
