Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Process oriented writing didactics are building on models of writing as a cognitive and developmental process which are firmly rooted in cognitivism of the 1980ies. (Academic) writing is usually understood as speech and/or a record of thought taking place “in the head”. However, at the time, cognitive science started going through a paradigm shift which lead to the current understanding of human cognition as being embodied and situated. In this seminar we will investigate the implications of the more recent perspectives on the mind for understanding the development of the academic writer.
Guiding questions for this seminar include:
- What is the relation of writing, writer and knowledge in academic writing?
- What can be gained from viewing writing processes as embodied, embedded, extended, and/or enactive?
- Is narrative a useful notion for academic writing and if so, in which sense?
The writing process will also be considered practically: You will be invited to reflect your own writing experiences and strategies as you go through your writing project, a short seminar paper. After an introductory phase in March and April, you will write a first draft as preparation for your presentation and as basis for the final version you will hand in.
Students with a background in process oriented writing didactics and/or an interest in writing research are welcome.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

o Physical and mental presence in seminar sessions, contributions to discussions (20%)
o Reading of compulsory literature for the session. A short summary (main points and open question and/or ideas) must be posted two days before the next session (10%)
o Participation in the review process (2 written reviews) (10%)
o Oral presentation and accompanying materials (20%)
o First version of short paper (6-8 pages) (10%)
o Revised version of short paper (6-8 pages) (30%)

Prüfungsstoff

Contents and discussions of the literature and seminar will be represented in the work required for the seminar.
