Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar is an introduction to several general problems in the philosophy of science: observable facts and experiments, induction and confirmation, falsificationism, Bayesianism, revolutions and incommensurability, the nature of theories, laws of nature, and realism vs anti-realism.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This is a discussion-based seminar, with minimal lecturing, focused on careful reading and rigorous understanding of philosophical texts.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation in discussion (15%), seminar presentation (25%), and a term paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor (60%). Detailed instructions for writing your paper will be given in the seminar.

All the evaluation components above are required for successfully completing this course. Only one unexcused absence is permitted.

100-90 pts -- very good
89-80 pts -- good
