Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar is focused on recent and contemporary discussions in the philosophy of practical rationality. A special focus is on the connection between the philosophy of practical rationality and rational choice theory in social science.
The proposed structure of the seminar (subject to change based on participant preferences) is this:

0. Introduction (1st meeting)
1. Rational Choice Explanation and Arational Action (2nd and 3rd meeting)
2. What is the Nature of Preferences? (meetings 4, 5, and 6)
3. Weakness of Will and the Rationality of Emotions (meetings 7, 8, 9, 10)
4. Rationality, Cooperation - and Corporations (meetings 11, 12)

The purpose of the seminar is to provide the participants with basic knowledge of the issues discussed, the necessary competence to pursue the issues further in potential independent research, and the ability to connect the philosophical issues with debates in social science.
The method of this seminar is close reading, group discussion based on regular participant input, and a self-moderation scheme for each meeting.
