Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is a Master’s thesis seminar and gives support to students writing their Master’s thesis in the fields of cognitive science. It is designed as an interdisciplinary course, where students develop the concept (topic, research question, methods, etc.) for their Master’s thesis, present and discuss their plans for their theses, issues and problems. It gives room both for presentations, discussions, as well as peer-feedback.
The seminar includes participation in the MEi:CogSci conference (writing an extended abstract, peer-review-process, Presentation/talk at the conference) as a compulsory requirement.

* Learning Outcomes:
- Ability to pose and follow a scientific/research question relevant to cognitive science
- Ability to plan, conduct, and document scientific work
- Ability to write an extended scientific abstract
- Ability to defend one’s research and constructively deal with critical remarks
- Ability to participate and contribute in a peer-review process
- Ability to present your research/thesis to an interdisciplinary audience/cognitive science community
- Collaborative work in physical and virtual environments
- Ability to engage in an interdisciplinary scientific discourse
- Ability to communicate one’s expertise in order to contribute constructive criticism to the work of others

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Active participation in the seminar (in discussions, etc.), teamwork sessions and MEi:CogSci Conference, oral presentation of your thesis in the seminar sessions, writing & uploading your Master’s thesis concept/exposé, extended abstract (1 page, max. 3000 characters) of your Master’s thesis research for the review process, 2 reviews of colleagues' abstracts, final abstract for the conference proceedings, giving a talk at the MEi:CogSci Conference

* If you are a *non* University of Vienna MEi:CogSci student, keep in mind that all the rules and deadlines of this course apply, however, you also have to comply to deadlines and rules of your home university (e.g., regarding formats and handing in your MA thesis concept/exposé, deadlines, etc.).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirements for passing this course:
- Successful registration and being accepted for this course
- Your presence at the first meeting (otherwise you will loose your place for this course)
- Active participation in the seminar (in discussions, feedback, etc.) and teamwork sessions
- You are allowed to miss max. 2 sessions (in case of absence please inform the instructor ahead of time in any case!)
- You have to be present and actively participate on ALL days of the MEi:CogSci Conference (see dates above)
- Compulsory presentation of your Master’s thesis project as a talk at the MEi:CogSci Conference
- Active participation in the peer-review process for the conference:
-- writing an extended abstract (max. 3000 characters),
-- 2 reviews of colleagues' abstracts,
-- final abstract (upload) for the conference proceedings following the conference´s format rules
- oral presentation of your MA thesis in the seminar sessions
- Submission of your Master’s thesis concept/exposé at the latest on April 30 (following template provided; see associated Moodle course)
- for further information, deadlines, and upload of your Masters thesis exposé see the MOODLE course (it is open after you have been accepted to this course)

Assessment criteria:
40% | oral presentation of your thesis & active participation (in discussions, etc.) in the seminar sessions
40% | Master’s thesis concept (following template provided; deadline of upload April 30)
10% | Active participation in the seminar and peer-review process for the MEi:CogSci Conference (giving feedback, discussing)
10% | Active participation and presence on ALL days of the MEi:CogSci Conference (includes presenting your Master’s Thesis in a talk) [participation is a must criterion!]

Important note: if you decide *not* to participate in the seminar, please inform the instructor immediately and de-register until March 31! Otherwise you will receive a negative grade.

Prüfungsstoff

Does not apply; the "exam topic" of this seminar is the respective MA thesis (and its development) of the student.
