Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

1. Exam
The overall grade is calculated from two separate components:
• Component I: Seminar paper (5,500-8,000 words) (85% of the final grade)
• Component II: Review of a draft of another participant (15% of the final grade).2. Language
The term paper may be written in English or German.3. Own work
• All written work must be produced by the examined students themselves.
• Do not plagiarize!
• Students agree that their submitted materials will be checked using the automated plagiarism checker Turnitin.
• But you may of course rely on the help of dictionaries, grammar books, and discussion with students, friends, etc.

• The seminar language is English - therefore, it is a prerequisite that students are willing and able to participate in discussions in English.
• Students must be able and willing to engage with texts from contemporary analytic philosophy (which will constitute the majority of our reading).
• Students must have solid competence with elementary logic which will be essential for understanding the reading.2. Obligatory class work
• Attendance is required; unexcused absence is permitted twice.
• Sessions have to prepared by answering a set of questions on the literature (5 times during the semester).
• Participants must be willing to write a draft of the term paper by the beginning of July. The paper will then be commented on (in writing) by the instructor and one student.
• The final subission of the term paper must take the comments of the referees into account (a supporting letter must be submitted that explains how this was done).3. Conditions for passing
• A positive grade in every component of the exam, and
• Completion of the obligatory class work.

The seminar will concern contemporary issues of (analytic) metaphysics and adjacent issues in philosophy of science.We will focus on the notion of fundamentality and its applications to philosophy of science. Some topics that we will study are David Lewis' theory of natural properties, laws of nature, the structure of space, the relationship between metaphysical and scientific fundamentality, and the relationship between physics and the natural sciences.2. GOALS
The goals for this seminar are
• to have fun with the topics, papers, and seminar discussion,
• to learn about a some contemporary issues in metaphysics, and
• to acquire the background knowledge needed to attend the summer school (see below).3. SUMMER SCHOOL
In addition to introducing the students to a selection of important philosophical topics in metaphysics and philosophy of science, the seminar serves a preparatory function for a summer school to take place this summer. • WHERE? Here in Vienna.While participants of the seminar are not obligated to attend the summer school, it is an ideal combination. Moreover, for participation in the summer school you can get extra Credit Points for the MA, to be used in the module M04. More details will follow on moodle and in class.
