180333 SE Ideas on logic (2007W)

In this seminar, we will read papers on what philosophers and logicians have thought about logic: its definition, its purpose, its methods, some of the main ideas introduced in the course of its development. We will insist on the emergence of new ideas in the history of logic and the background issue of this seminar will be the classical question "What is logic?" We may read classical papers by authors like Aristoteles, Arnauld and Nicole, Leibniz, Kant or Mill, as well as texts from the period of modern logic (Frege, Russell, Kripke, Quine, etc.) The exact list of the chosen papers will be given at the beginning of the semester. There is no prerequisite in logic for this seminar but some basic knowledge in logic will probably help.
