Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

One of the most far reaching recent developments in the fields of the cognitive sciences has been the growing trend of including social and cultural factors in research on cognition. This trend can be seen in most if not all the disciplines in the cognitive sciences.

In this interdisciplinary seminar we will cover this social turn by placing it in its historical context and looking at three domains:

- physiology
- psychology
- situated cognition (a rapprochement betweens cognitive science and socio-cultural sciences such as anthropology and sociology)

Research programs in these domains that have taken a social turn include social cognitive neuroscience (a recent joint venture between cognitive neuroscience and social psychology), cognitive ethology, evolutionary anthropology, ... these approaches have brought social understanding and cultural cognition to the center of cognitive science.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After participating in this seminar students will have
" acquired in depth knowledge about an aspect of social cognition they have investigated in small teams
" made a joint presentation of their work, thus making it accessible to the other teams
" explored the larger topic of the social turn in cognitive science by discussing and integrating the contributions of the teams in the plenum
" gained understanding of a set of current positions and approaches in cognitive science

This will add to their experience of
" reading and presenting primary scientific literature
" reflecting on and relating different disciplines and methodologies
" discussing and collaborating in the context of an interdisciplinary group of students with different backgrounds and areas of expertise

Prüfungsstoff

We will analyze how this social turn is taking place, what it means, and how it changes the way these sciences are done.
Students will conduct a literature research in one of the domains, hold group presentations, and participate in plenary discussions

The seminar will be held in blocked sessions.
We are planning on including presentations and Q and A sessions from researchers working in those fields, as well.
