Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will examine the role of aesthetics in the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. It is designed to give an overview of the work of Deleuze and Guattari, both that written together and separately, particularly in relation to Aesthetics. The course will also give an introduction to the philosophical discipline of Aesthetics, tracing its development through both the central problems it poses (the conditions of experience, the nature of the sensation, the affect, etc.), as well as the philosophers that Deleuze and Guattari specifically engage with (Kant, Nietzsche, Spinoza, Bergson, and Merleau-Ponty). Finally, the course will trace Deleuze and Guattari's development of these problems and philosophies in relation to various aesthetic periods and concepts (Romanticism, Modernism, abstraction, the avant-garde, etc.), to art historical theory (Heinrich Wölfflin, Alois Riegl, Wilhelm Worringer, Clement Greenberg) and art practices (painting, music, cinema, etc.).Participating students will be expected to follow the course reading list. Readings will be distributed a week before their discussion in the class.
