Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

We say we crave knowledge. We say we would die for it. We go to university for it. We all value knowledge. But what is so valuable about it? In particular, is knowledge more valuable than merely true belief? Intuition says yes. If I have never been to Vienna and accidentally form the true belief, say, that the Institute for Philosophy is in Universitaetstrasse, my belief would not be considered as valuable as would the knowledge of a local who has walked past the Institute many times. We all feel that knowledge is more valuable than true belief. And yet, on closer inspection, it proves difficult to say where precisely the value of knowledge lies. For example, having the true belief that the Institute is in Universitaetsrasse is - for all practical purposes - the same as having the knowledge: if I needed to go to the Institute, I would get there just as well if I had a true belief about its location as I would if I knew its location. Although the puzzle about the value of knowledge is at least as old as Plato, philosophers have only recently become interested in it again. The course is devoted to solving this puzzle

Prüfungsstoff

Each session starts with a short introduction of the prescribed reading - done by one of you - and then moves into a discussion of the reading. Having read the prescribed paper is therefore essential. But since this debate is emergent and we will need to do construction work together, knowledge of - or at least true beliefs about - the secondary literature will be also needed.

Aims: To develop a detailed critical understanding of the central questions of the debate and to establish fruitful connections amongst these questions.

Relevant for the assessment: regular attendance, one presentation, active participation in discussions, two 10-page essays on pre-set topics.
