* Assignments will not be accepted beyond the deadlines, simply for logistical reasons. So timely submission - early submission encouraged! - is the basis for receiving a grade.
* A passing grade for the seminar paper is mandatory to pass this course.
* Having read the literature and having done the work is the prerequisite for our work in class. Students can speak to its content and go beyond it by voicing their critical comments and objections to the argument, by making connections to other readings in or outside of class, etc.
* Submitted work represents the result of diligent thinking on the basis of the literature, the class discussions and, most importantly, students’ own critical and well-reasoned argument. The intellectual achievement is in structuring those thoughts and contents in a narrative that unfolds on the page for any informed reader to understand. It includes the use of terminology and concepts, and both support and criticism of one’s own argument.

The list of readings will be provided in the first session. The course readings were chosen to provide students with a basis and inspiration from which to develop their own critical thinking. Finding and integrating additional literature will be necessary to inform the seminar paper.

Students will have the opportunity to learn by example how to generate and analyze various forms of data (text, numbers, etc.) and how those results can be placed in an argument that is embedded in and advocates for education theory as an integral part of education policy making. By the same token, the problematic implications of this very approach shall be discussed openly and critically.
There will be opportunity for students to work with original data, try different things out for themselves and experience first hand the challenges and thrills of a project such as this one. Students are expected to work through literature and apply their independent thoughts, their diligent critique and their growing ability to argue academically - both in form and in content.
No prior knowledge or skills of data or respective technology are needed. Students will be provided the relevant input, however, students are indeed expected to invest time and effort into this seminar. The course has a strong emphasis on respectful and goal-oriented peer-reviewing as well as individual feedback to students to develop their thoughts thoroughly and continuously through the course of the seminar.
