Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of this seminar is to read and discuss both classical and contemporary texts from the philosophical-educational current of pragmatism. Not only will the students acquire critical insight in the traditional pragmatic understanding of concepts such as experience, learning, thinking, and democracy and the theoretical presuppositions of pragmatism, also they will be able to discern how these ideas are reconstructed within contemporary philosophies and theories that have a strong educational bearing (cf. Isabelle Stengers’ ecology of practices, Donna Haraway’s situated knowledges). The central question of the seminar will be how we can use these concepts and theories in order to unearth the educational dynamics at play within contemporary urban educational practices.

The course will start with a general introduction of the topic, and from then onwards there will be sessions on pragmatic ideas and theories, discussions about texts from both classical and contemporary pragmatic authors, and feedback on work-in-progress concerning the case analyses prepared by the students.
