Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will consider the social construction of educational systems and the consequences of this development for a variety of institutions, I.e., the economy, the polity and religion. It will focus on global as well as national sources of these processes. In this context the course will consider plausible theoretical explanations for a variety of empirical trends, e.g., the expansion of public education; changing forms of educational organization; new models of 'student' and appropriate pedagogical practices; the rise of individualism; and changing forms of solidarity in the polity and religion.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course will have a final written exam that will count for 30% of the grade; 3 short papers during the semester worth 60% of the grade; and group discussions which will count for 10%.
