COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course invites prospective teachers to enter into a reflective, convivial dialogue examining visions and arguments concerning aims, values, methods, and assumptions underlying global education. The course introduces students to a broad range of viewpoints, approaches, orientations as well as teaching methods, materials and media exploring and examining various pedagogical conceptions such as peace education, human rights education, environmental education, development education, education for sustainability and multicultural education under the common denominator of the global approach.
The course will be conducted in the English language.

THEORETICAL STANCE:

The major underlying assumption of global education is the need for a shift of consciousness to a holistic paradigm in the aims, values, contents and methods of education. Global education is understood as the pedagogical manifestation of an inclusive approach to the world, stressing the interrelatedness of social, economical, political, cultural and environmental phenomena, the interconnectedness of individuals and communities locally and globally, the reciprocity of past, present and future and the complementary nature of the cognitive, affective, social/behavioral and spiritual dimensions of human learning.
