Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to train the students at proficiently performing the steps necessary to conduct an empirical study in psychology when starting from nothing but a designated topic (see below). This is a 2-semester course programme. Attendance to summer semester 2020 course is not mandatory but strongly recommended. This first semester aims to prepare the students to conduct an experiment or a survey for their bachelor project in summer semester 2020.
The steps:
(1) Become familiar with a topic
(2) Find a research question and formulate hypotheses
(3) Identify and assess the methods available
(4) Design your study
(5) Implement your study
(6) Conduct the study
Program: The students will be taught the steps 1 to 6. The students will be requested to produce a group-based work for each step from 1 to 4 and will be evaluated on this basis. Groups of 4-5 students are to be created.
The course will be divided into theory sessions (teacher's advice) and practical sessions (supervised group work).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Good reading skills in English. Attendance is compulsory; students may be absent without excuse for no more than two lectures.

Literatur

Introductory literature: Oakley DA, Halligan PW. Hypnotic suggestion: opportunities for cognitive neuroscience. Nat Rev Neurosci 2013;14:564-76.
