Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

1. To develop an understanding of the biological basis of stress, its effects on physical health, and how it interacts with a wide range of social and affective psychological phenomena.

2. Learn/improve skills involved in reading and understanding scientific articles. This will entail:
- Critically reading research papers to extract their “main message”
- Reflecting on, and summarizing research articles (through discussions and writing reflections)
- Learning to integrate different perspectives on the same topic
- Developing new research questions motivated by existing literature

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Each week there will be a target reading, which we will all read and discuss in class.
Students will also choose empirical articles to present for discussion during class time.

Assignments include weekly thought papers and a final research proposal.

Your weekly responsibilities:
• Read the target reading and prepare to discuss it in class.
• Each week, one or two students will lead the discussion of the target reading.
• Prior to each class, write a brief research idea (about 200-300 words) inspired by the reading. Present a hypothesis, a research design, predicted results, and implications. Send this in an email to the instructor by 10:00 on Monday of the week of the relevant class.
• Identify an empirical article related to the target reading. Present it to the group in class. Give a 5-minute explanation of the research in your empirical article. Be prepared to answer basic questions about the research.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

• Regular attendance (max absenteeism: 2 classes).
• Weekly reflections on target article (15%)
• Leading group discussion of target article (20%)
• Active participation in class (15%)
• 5-10 minute discussion of your own article in class (15%)
• Final, 2-3 page research proposal (35)%
