Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is intended to provide the sufficient knowledge to do empirical and quantitative scientific work in the domain of experimental psychology/cognitive neuroscience. Although not necessary, we recommend taking TEWA1 (SS 2019) followed by TEWA2 (WS 2019). Through a combination of theory-oriented classes, and hands-on practical tutorials, the following material will be covered:

Aims of TEWA1:
1) Literature research with the use of reference managers (Zotero)
2) Independent development of a research idea and detailed formulation of its experimental implementation, which will be presented orally, and summarized in a written exposé
3) Basic use of Excel (formulas, pivot tables, plots, simple stats)
4) Programming of computer tasks with the Psychopy software
5) Planning and preparation of an experiment (formulating hypotheses based on the literature, creation of stimuli, task programming, ethics)
6) Practical work both individually and in small groups

In TEWA2 (WS 2019), data will be acquired for the planned experiment, and processed and analyzed with the software R (preprocessing, plotting, statistics)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Presence, oral presentation (40%) written exposé (50%), active participation (10%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation in all performance-relevant aspects. Acquisition of the competences necessary for the planning and carrying out of a research project in the field of cognitive psychology/social neuroscience.

Prüfungsstoff

Reading of the relevant literature, development of the skills taught during the course, presence and active participation in class, oral presentation and written exposé about own research idea.
