Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is intended to provide the sufficient knowledge to do empirical and quantitative scientific work in the domain of experimental psychology/cognitive neuroscience. Although not necessary, we recommend taking TEWA1 (SS 2020) followed by TEWA2 (WS 2020). Through a combination of theory-oriented classes, and hands-on practical tutorials, the following material will be covered:

Aims of TEWA1:
1) Literature research with the use of reference managers (Zotero)
2) Understanding academic literature and developing scientific thinking through practical work in class (individually and in groups)
3) Independent development of a research idea and detailed formulation of its experimental implementation, which will be presented orally, and summarized in a written exposé
4) Programming basic experimental tasks using MATLAB (Psychtoolbox)
5) Basic use of Excel for data management (formulas, pivot tables, plots, simple stats)
5) Preparation of a simple experiment with TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation)
- programming of a task in MATLAB with guidance in class
- getting accustomed with handling TMS
- independent preparation of ethics application and questionnaires

In TEWA2 (WS 2020), data will be acquired for the planned experiment, and processed and analyzed with the software R (preprocessing, plotting, statistics)
