Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will review the fundamentals of positive psychology and differentiate empirical, reproducible positive psychology from ‘pop’ psychology. We will investigate the main theories of positive psychology and examine the criticisms against the movement. We will examine specific positive emotions and positive characteristics more closely, defining each emotions and examining the impact of each emotion in different educational contexts. We will also practically use positive psychology interventions.

The course has the following objectives:
• Understand the aims of positive psychology and differentiate it from 'pop' psychology.
• Understand the emerging position of positive psychology within the rest of psychology.
• Identify and understand various approaches to positive psychology.
• Identify and understand various positive emotions and positive characteristics.
• Understand and apply practical positive psychology exercises.
• Apply research findings regarding positive psychology, positive emotions, and positive characteristics to specific learning contexts.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Video Presentation: For the first assignment of this course, you need to make a 10 minute video presentation on a specific positive emotion or positive characteristic. The video has to be pre-recorded. You may work either alone or in a team of two to create your video. Each video will have a unique topic, you may choose your topic on Moodle. For more information on the content of your video and how the video presentation will be assessed please see the Moodle page of this course. Lastly, please note that your videos will be played to the class during the course.

Essay: Each student needs to submit a 2000-2500 word review of the literature on a specific positive emotion/characteristic in a specific learning environment. Each student will have a unique topic for their essay, the available topics can be chosen on Moodle. Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grade Composition
• Video Presentation – 50%
• Essay – 50%

Grades will be converted to the Austrian 1-5 system in the following way:
≥ 90% = 1
75% – 89% = 2
60% – 74% = 3
45% – 59% = 4
≤ 44% = 5

Late submissions will be handled on a case-by-case basis, but please note you may be penalized.

Literatur

Text Book: There is no prescribed text book for this course. The course will be predominantly based on the Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology (2nd Edition), by S. J. Lopez and C. R. Snyder (Eds.). However, you do not need to purchase this book as we will be using powerpoint slides and journal articles in the course.
