Studierende, die schon ein Thema für die Master- oder Doktorarbeit mit Fokus (f)MRI vereinbart haben, werden gebeten beim ersten Treffen den Titel des Themas und den Namen der betreuenden Person bekanntzugeben und werden dann bei der Platzvergabe bevorzugt.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims: After this course, students should (a) understand the theoretical basics of fMRI-based neuroimaging and data analysis, (b) be able to critically evaluate neuroimaging studies, (c) have the practical skills to perform basic fMRI data analysis, and (d) have a comprehensive overview of the available resources that would allow them to delve deeper into the topic as part of a potential Master/PhD thesis.

Contents: The course teaches the theoretical background and practical steps necessary to perform (and interpret the results of) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of the human brain. (1) The weekly lectures provide the necessary content to understand fMRI data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation and will give an overview of the current trends in the field. Students are required to actively participate in the oral discussions and to hold a mini-Journal Club (they can choose from a list of papers) (2) The weekly practical sessions will be held online. Students will be asked to analyze openly accessible fMRI data sets using the Nipype framework (https://nipype.readthedocs.io/en/latest/), involving both individual assignments and teamwork in smaller groups. Students are required to actively participate and to orally present the project outline/status/outcomes.

Methods: The course consists of oral presentations given by the lecturer and the students; students are asked to actively participate in class and during the online practical sessions; work on individual assignments and in smaller groups; excursion to the fMRI scanner of the Faculty of Psychology.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The final grade considers the active, oral participation during the lectures (20%), the oral presentation (mini-Journal Club, 30%), the completion of the data camp tutorial (5%), and the individual (15%) and group assignments (30%). A maximum of 2 lectures and 2 practicals can be missed.

Grade “1”: from 90%
Grade “2”: from 80%
Grade “3”: from 70%
Grade “4”: from 60%
Grade “5”: below 60%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Basic knowledge of cognitive neuroscience and statistics. Knowledge of Python or other programming languages is a plus, but not a necessity. Students will be asked to complete a Data Camp introduction to Python at the beginning of the semester.
