Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course provides students with a practical introduction to data analysis and the application of statistical methods in the social sciences. The content of this course includes the use and analysis of questionnaires and surveys, the interpretation of statistical data as well as the fundamentals of descriptive and inferential statistics. The datasets used will come from recent political science research.

As part of this course, students will learn how to use the computer package SPSS to investigate social science research questions.

This seminar is designed as an extension to the lecture course 'Quantitative Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung' held by Prof. Dr. Sylvia Kritzinger. It is therefore strongly recommended to attend the lecture as well.

Prospective participants should also note that this course will be held entirely in English. This applies to the seminars themselves, the recommended readings as well as the homework assignments and the final paper.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The seminar requirements are as follows:

(1) Regular and active participation (maximum of two absences allowed): 10% of final mark
(2) Four homework assignments (4 x 10% of the final mark), to be handed in at an agreed date
(3) One final paper (Abschlussarbeit) of 2000 words, deadline: 30 April 2010 (50% of final mark)

Finally, please note that attendance of the first session is absolutely mandatory as those absent will lose their place on this course.
