Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is complementary to the course “210014 VO BAK 4 Quantitative Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung (2022W)” taught by Professor Markus Wagner.

The aim of the course is to equip students with the basic applied skills needed to carry out easy data projects on their own. The content of the course includes basic descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as the graphic representation of results.

The course design relies on practical exercises in the computer lab and interactive discussions. Students will revise the basics of empirical quantitative research methods and learn to apply the basic tools of quantitative data analysis using the software Stata.

By the end of the course, students should be able to describe and manipulate a dataset and conduct basic inferential analyses with Stata. Students should also be able to develop and answer research questions using quantitative methods and to present quantitative research findings appropriately.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The final assessment will be based on the following components:

(1) Participation (10 points): Regular attendance and active participation in class activities such as software tasks and discussions.

(2) Four homework assignments (25 points): Assignments will be based on materials in the course texts.

(3) A mid-term exam before Christmas (25 points): The test will concern theoretical questions about quantitative methods of empirical social research and/or interpretation of Stata output. Duration: max. 45 minutes.

(4) Final assignment (40 points): At the end of the course, you will be required to write a final paper of 2.000-2.500 words, focusing on quantitative methods with applications in Stata.

Students have to submit their assignments as a pdf and always include the corresponding Stata files. The software Turnitin will be used to check plagiarism.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance policy:
Attendance in the first session of the course is compulsory. Students missing the first session will be deregistered from the course. During the semester, students are allowed to miss up to two classes.

Prerequisites:
A basic understanding of empirical research and statistics is assumed. Students are therefore expected to attend the course “210014 VO BAK 4 Quantitative Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung (2022W)”. Prior knowledge of the software Stata is helpful but not required.

Minimum requirements:
In order to complete the course with a positive grade students have to attempt all course components and their assignments.

Grading Scale:
90-100 points = 1 (excellent)
80-89 points = 2 (good)
70-79 points = 3 (satisfactory)
60-69 points = 4 (sufficient)
< 60 points = 5 (fail)

Prüfungsstoff

The examination will focus on different statistical concepts covered in class and will include basic data analysis using the software Stata. Detailed instructions about the homework assignments and the final assignment will be posted on Moodle in due time.

The final paper is due on February 15th 2023.
