Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course serves as a complementary course to the lecture "Quantitative Methods of Empirical Social Research". We will review the lecture content and apply it using practical examples, so it is assumed that students are partially familiar with the content of the practical sessions. Prior knowledge in the software (Stata) is not required. The specific content of the course includes: the fundamentals of empirical social research, an introduction to Stata, descriptive and inferential statistics, and the overall application of quantitative methods.The course goals are twofold: 1) to review the content of the lecture and 2) to apply it practically in the statistical program Stata 15. The sessions consist of a brief review of the lecture content, an introduction to its implementation in Stata, and practical exercises in Stata. By the end of the semester, students should 1) be familiar with concepts of statistical data analysis and the correct implementation thereof, and 2) be able to interpret the latter in an empirical research paper. The practical examples will draw mainly, but not exclusively, on survey data from the Austrian National Election Study (AUTNES).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The final grade will be based on the following components:Participation (10%). Students are expected to participate regularly and be on time. Points will be deducted for tardies and lack of participation.Homework (25%). Students will receive 2 extensive homework assignments during the semester and are allowed to solve these in groups with a maximum of 2 students.Mid-term (25%). This test encompasses theoretical knowledge and interpretations of Stata output. It is not allowed nor possible to use Stata. For students that are unable to take the mid-term due to illness (with a written excuse from your doctor), there will one other date available to take the make-up exam.Final paper (40%). In a final paper (2000-2500 words) students should independently apply the learned methods to a concrete research question and apply all relevant methods used to answer this question in Stata. The deadline for submission is 31.3.2020.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students must complete all of the course requisites in order to pass the class. This means that you will only be graded if you attend the course regularly, complete the homework assignments, take the mid-term, and submit a final paper. If (at least) one of these criteria is not fulfilled, then the student will receive a 5 as a final grade in the course.
