Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course provides an overview of structures, processes, institutions, and key players of the Austrian political system and of that of the European Union (EU). Topics are the political system, the constitution, parliament, the party system and government, the Europeanization of Austrian politics, and the development and institutional structure of the European Union. In addition, a particular focus is placed on the following themes: quality of democracy and elections (election campaigns). The (1) Austrian political system, (2) the EU and (3) the Europeanization of (Austrian) politics are being interlinked within a comparative framework of analysis. As particular emphasis is to be placed on the upcoming elections to the European Parliament, scheduled for June 6-9, 2024. Methodically, the course applies a combination of joint analyses, discussions, and presentations by students.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

In terms of a quality assurance of good scientific practice the lecturer can ask for additional verbal reflections about the writing assignments, which are then also relevant for the final grade.

The two writing assignments are being carried out at home, based on a proper scientific approach, so sources can be used. Writing assignments are checked by the plagiarism software “Turnitin”. The final examination takes place during the last class meeting of the course, and follows the logic to answer questions in an open format.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The objective of the course is to deepen the respective content based on a systematic review of the provided literature, in order to gain a broader understanding of the Austrian political system, the system of the European Union and of processes of Europeanization of (Austrian) politics. In addition, the critical reception and presentation of the scientific literature as well as the competent writing of texts are being practiced. Not more than one unexcused class absence is permitted. The assessment scale refers to: the writing of two texts; an examination at the end of the semester; and participation (group presentations). The partial performances are being weighted as follows: participation (including presentations) 25%, first writing assignment 25%, second writing assignment 25%, and the final examination 25%. The final grad applies the five-fold Austrian grading scale. All partial performances are to be provided on time and are to be assessed positively, so to complete the course successfully.

The examination materials are covered in a separate reader (see further specifications on the "literature" below).
