Course Description:
In this seminar course, we will, after a review of the EU’s foreign policy and politics (not only ‘classic’ foreign policy, but also external action, and internal policies with an external dimension) including the relevant actors and institutions, we will take a deep dive into the relations between the EU, the US, and Africa. We will also study theories and concepts which can help us carrying out analyses of the EU’s relations with and policy towards named third parties.
Methods:
• Reading and analysis of academic literature
• Presentations
• Discussions and interactive tasks in different groups and formats
• Carrying out your own research and writing of a short research paperGoals:
After attending the course, carrying out all assignments conscientiously and participating in an active manner, students should be able to
• approach and read relevant academic literature in a systematic and critical way
• describe and explain the workings of the relevant institutions and actors within and outside of the EU
• describe and explain the EU’s policy making in the field of its external relations with the US and Africa
• ask research questions with regard to this policy field and answer those based on their own research
• carry out analyses and present them orally as well as in writing
