AIMS: The aim of the lecture is to provide an introductory overview of current theories, concepts and debates in gender and politics.METHODS: Lecture and discussion.CONTENT:The lecture course introduces students to one of the most vibrant fields in political science. At the cross-roads of political science and the multidisciplinary study of gender and sexuality, “Politics and Gender” considers how, 1. everyday power relations are shaped by gender and sexuality, 2. how political institutions are themselves profoundly shaped by gender and sexuality, and 3. How political institutions shape gender and sexual equality. We will examine a variety of movements in feminist theory, gender theory, and Queer theory. We will then look at political institutions, ranging from the family, to military, and to the state.BAK12 is especially suitable to the following students:
- Students with a background in other areas of political science, but who are not familiar with feminist and Queer approaches to the study of politics
- Students with a background in gender studies, but who are not familiar with political science

There will be a written exam at the end of the summer term. You will have to choose 3 out of 4 questions on different topics that will have to be answered with short essays, for each answer you can reach up to 20 points.Note: You can either answer in German or English.There will be four opportunities to take the exam.
