Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The outcome of elections is a fundamental determinant for the course of the country in the following years. Hence, analysing when and why citizens vote and which party they vote for is highly important. In this seminar, the students will analyse election outcomes and voting behaviour in a comparative perspective. We will analyse voting behaviour on the micro and on the macro level and try to answer, amongst others, the following questions: How do individual characteristics like age, gender, and education influence voting behaviour? What are the consequences of different institutional arrangements (e.g. voting systems, electoral thresholds)? Why do citizens decide to vote strategically? This course will additionally also look at voting decisions by marginalised groups such as the LGBTQ+ community and at support for radical and other niche parties.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

• You have to take part in the first session
• Attendance and class participation (10 % of the final mark)
• Submit three meaningful questions for the required readings five times during the seminar (15 % of the final mark)
• Two discussion papers (25 % of the final mark)
• Research paper (50 % of the final mark)

Each component will be marked separately. The overall mark will be the weighted average of the marks from the four components, whereby it is not necessary that each of the components is successful. In other words, students are allowed to fail any of the four components and can still pass the class as long as the overall mark is at least 4. However, students have to submit at least something for every component.

The marking scheme is structed as follows:

100-87 Points = 1
86,99-75 Points = 2
74,99-63 Points = 3
62,99-50 Points = 4
49,99-0 Points = 5
