Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Why do people choose to participate or not participate in politics? What explains unequal political participation and what are its consequences? Under what conditions are protests successful, ignored, or repressed? This seminar deals with conventional and unconventional political participation. The goal of this course is to understand patterns, motives, and outcomes of political participation. Considering both individual level and institutional explanations, we discuss the main theoretical expectations and apply them to empirical examples, including recent protest movements. Our discussions are based on related research articles and encompass the critical assessment of prevailing theories and quantitative analyses.

The final grade consists of the following partial requirements:

- seminar paper (50%).

- seminar paper submitted until the deadline (31 July 2024).A software will be used to check submissions for plagiarism.Grading Scale:
90-100 points = 1 (excellent)
80-89 points = 2 (good)
70-79 points = 3 (satisfactory)
60-69 points = 4 (sufficient)
< 60 points = 5 (fail)

Prüfungsstoff
The assessment of participation and the presentation is based on the engagement with the course literature and the ability to critically reflect upon research in the field of political participation.The assessment of the seminar paper is based on the quality of the following components: (1) the research question, (2) the presentation of the state of art, (3) the development of theory and hypotheses, (4) the argumentation for a suitable research design as well as (5) formal criteria.
