Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The latest report of the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute observed: "The world has fewer democracies (N=88) than autocracies (N=91) for the first time in over 20 years. Liberal democracies have become the least common regime type in the world, a total of 29 in 2024."

Embedded in this political context, this course focuses on the following questions:
(1) What are the causes of democratic backsliding?
(2) What makes democracies more resilient against backsliding pressures?
(3) How can democracies return from the brink of backsliding?

Below, I list how many points you can gain for each component.

Participation 25% (25 points)
Group project 30% (30 points)
Reflection 5% (5 points)
Proposal 10% (10 points)
Term paper 30% (30 points)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The minimum requirements for completing the course are:
-- Attendance during the first session
-- Regular attendance (you cannot miss more than two sessions)
-- Each graded component must be completed with a passing grade (at least half the number of
possible points per component)
-- Submission of graded components by the deadline (meeting a set minimum standard for what counts as submission)

The course grade is determined based on a points system (max. 100 points). Each point is equivalent to one percent of your grade. This system translates into the following numeric grades:
(1) Very good: 88-100 points
(2) Good: 75-87 points
(3) Satisfactory: 62-74 points
(4) Sufficient: 50-61 points
(5) Insufficient/fail: 0-49 points
