Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The seminar equips students with essential skills to develop suitable research designs and apply quantitative methods, empowering them to independently conduct their own research and successfully complete their master's thesis.We address key stages in the research process, such as formulating a research question, conducting a comprehensive literature review, developing a theoretical argument, defining concepts, deriving hypotheses, selecting cases, designing and identifying suitable measurement instruments and conducting a quantitative empirical analysis.While the first half of the course focuses on the fundamentals of research design, the second half will involve hands-on practical exercises in data analysis.Students are free to choose whether they prefer to undertake the practical exercises using the statistical software Stata (student licenses available via: https://academic.softwareone.com/#/UniWien_Studierende) or the open-source software environment R (https://www.r-project.org/).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The assessment will be based on three components:
• A seminar paper, to be submitted by August 15, 2024, which constitutes 40% of the total grade.
• Reading-based homework, contributing to 30% of the grade.
• Practical exercises in data analysis, making up the remaining 30%.Grading scale:
• 100-87 Points: Excellent (1)
• 86-75 Points: Good (2)
• 74-63 Points: Satisfactory (3)
• 62-50 Points: Sufficient (4)
• 49-0 Points: Insufficient (5)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
While a prior understanding of the fundamentals of statistics and quantitative methods is beneficial, it is not mandatory.To successfully complete the course, students are required to meet the following minimum criteria: Students should attend at least 80% of the sessions, complete at least 50% of the weekly tasks, and submit the seminar paper on time.Plagiarism, inauthentic, or otherwise fraudulent work is strictly prohibited. Any such instances will result in the course not being assessed, indicated as an 'X' on the transcript. The plagiarism detection software 'Turnitin' will be utilized to ensure academic integrity. If necessary, the instructor may invite students to a ‘grade-relevant conversation’ about their submitted work.
