HYBRID: The seminar will take place on Thursdays, partly online (March+April) and partly in presence (probably May+June; Seminarraum EIF, Apostelgasse 23, 1030 Wien, t.b.c.). The seminar plan with exact dates will be distributed in the first meeting (bi-weekly at the time slot specified, but slightly irregular intervals with more blocks during the coaching and the presentation phases).

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will focus on how the so-called “digital revolution” challenges our understandings and practice of democracy. Students will learn different authors’ perspectives and will get a thorough overview on EU policies regulating various aspects of digitalisation, including some own research on specific related aspects. Therefore, students should bring to the seminar a thorough basic understanding of how the EU works (institutions and processes) and should feel comfortable working with complex legal documents of EU institutions. Moreover, social scientific writing and presentation skills will be trained in -depth.
There will be an introductory phase with an initial lecture on the topic, a reading phase, a research + coaching phase, and plenaries for presentations and debates. Furthermore, students may be asked to attend relevant public events.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular presence and active participation in all units is crucial. Deliverables include summarizing articles or public debates, researching + listing literature, a seminar paper, various presentations and an interim exam after the research training part.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

All deliverables are mandatory for a positive grade. 50% seminar paper, 30% other deliverables such as literature reports, book presentations + seminar exposees, 20% oral and written contributions to the debate.
