Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The hype triggered by the YouTube reality game show "7 vs. Wild - Season 2", which is considered the media event of the past winter in German-speaking countries, is perhaps the most impressive indication of the general interest in topics such as "Bushcraft" and "Survival" on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and other social media platforms.
Of course, the pop-cultural aesthetics, which combine trailers in traditional fashion, first-person shooter perspectives from video games, found footage format and GoPro aesthetics, have contributed to the hype. However, the enormous popularity of a format in which seven participants with a maximum of seven pieces of equipment of their choice hold out alone in the wilderness for seven days, master daily "challenges" and film themselves in the process, raises the question of what this has to do with current political and social trends.
Apart from the concrete example, this question also arises for the popularity of "outdoor/bushcraft/survival" topics and formats in general.
Against this background, the seminar uses examples taken from different social media platforms, but also from blogs, to reconstruct images and discourses conveyed in respective (pop-cultural) formats by means of visual and verbal stagings, and discusses their political significance.

The course is planned as a research seminar and will provide input in terms of both concepts/theories and research tools/methods.

The learning objective includes not only the acquisition of knowledge on the topic of the seminar but also the acquisition of research skills and experience in the implementation of a project based on the analysis of multi-modal research material.
