Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The ongoing digital revolution creates a number of severe challenges to our states and societies. In particular, democracy is a fragile multi-process based on various essential components that are now all affected by digitalisation. Moreover, the sum may even be significantly more than its parts: The platform economy (co-)shapes the media landscape that (co-)shapes individuals that (co-)shape governments and the EU. There could hence appear a downward spiral where the above-mentioned components of the political system (at large) drive each other further in the direction of a less democratic system, over and over again. Can the ongoing regulatory debates, most importantly at EU level, be potential turning points? We will discuss the recent and current efforts of the EU to get a grip on digitalisation.

This intense seminar is for very advanced students. It is designed to be the last course before writing the MA thesis and can possibly guide you towards a suitable topic for your MA thesis. You should already have at least some basic training in the field of European integration and know the principles of the workings of the EU institutions and decision-making processes.

A “Forschungspraktikum” is a research training course to coach how to best develop and execute students’ own research. Accordingly, social scientific researching, writing, and presentation skills will be trained in-depth.

Methods will include, most importantly, presentations by the teacher and the students, group work, peer feedback, and debate. You will need a good command of the English language to follow this course, and a stable internet connection with working camera and microphone is indispensable.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Presence and active participation in each unit is indispensable. Take care: research practice courses are always particularly work-intensive since their 12 ECTS will amount to approx. 300 hours of work overall and each unit will have to be prepared. Since the course will be partly online and lasts for two units each time, long screen-time breaks before and afterwards are recommended.

AI and its dangers and potentials for academic research will be discussed in class. Students are encouraged to use AI for improving their texts on the level of spelling and grammar. Any relevant software used should be acknowledged in the deliverables (e.g. add list of software and AI used for the deliverable after the list of references). The use of text-generative AI is not allowed.

In case you do need to miss a unit:
- Please contact two other students to make sure you catch up on everything (in addition to checking the information distributed by the professor).
- Send a medical or superior’s certificate to proof you needed to miss the unit (maximum 2 missed units)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grading: Written deliverables (65%), presentations and feedback for others or debate contributions (35%). Delivery of all partial assignments is mandatory for a positive grade.

After the specified deadlines, and in the absence of special reasons for failure to deliver in time expressed in a medical or superior’s certificate, submissions will not add points for your grade but an acceptable deliverable will be necessary for being graded.

Students need to know and without exception follow the good academic practice standards (most importantly: https://politikwissenschaft.univie.ac.at/studium/informationen-fuer-studierende/#c511206, https://studienpraeses.univie.ac.at/infos-zum-studienrecht/sicherung-der-guten-wissenschaftlichen-praxis/plagiat/, click on "Hier finden Sie eine Handreichung, worauf bei der Verwendung und Zitierung von Quellen zu achten ist").

There will be training and a test during the early phase of the seminar. Correct citing and documenting of sources are, inter alia, a minimum basis for a positive grade in this class.

Plagiarism software may be used (‘Turnitin’) and individual interviews to individually discuss written work are possible and need to be passed.

Ongoing work with weekly deliverables plus seminar paper (prüfungsinhärente LV). Students need to know and apply correctly all content discussed throughout the semester, including the research-practical aspects.

Literatur

Will be distributed in the early phase of the seminar.
