Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Seminar Outline

Alt Right / Alternative Right

Far-right / Radical-right / white nationalist and supremacist
Origins in the 2000s, became more popular during the 2010s (mainly online, but also increasingly offline)

Only vaguely defined term
2010: The Alternative Right webzine (Richard B. Spencer)
Similar media: Daily Stormer (Andrew Anglin) and Breitbart News (Steve Bannon)

Support for Donald Trump's 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns
2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia

Characteristics: biological racism, identity politics (“Whiteness”) / support for a white supremacist ethnically defined state / fight against alleged “white genocide” / great replacement, promotion of conspiracy theories, antisemitism, racism, antifeminism, rejection of liberal democracy

The seminar will a) provide input in terms of concepts and theories and b) discuss examples and case studies

Seminar Structure

- Introduction to seminar topic (course instructor);
- Presentation and discussion of seminal texts/ mandatory reading and other relevant course material;
- Oral presentation and subsequent discussion of students' draft seminar papers

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Requirements
- Regular attendance;
- Active participation in plenary discussions and in-class group work;
- Written comments on assigned mandatory reading and presentation in-class;
- Oral presentation of draft seminar papers (list of topics will be provided, students can choose from the list; however, suggestions for further topics are encouraged and most welcome);
- Seminar paper (either in English or German language);

Submitted assignments will be checked (e.g. using the software Turnitin) with regard to plagiarism and AI generated content.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grading will be based on
- Regular participation (2 unexcused absences will be tolerated) - 10%
- 2 written comments on assigned reading and informed contributions to in-class group work and subsequent plenary discussions - 30%
- Oral presentation of draft seminar paper (handout mandatory, visualization optional, format depends on number of participants) - 20%
- Written seminar paper (appr. 12-15 pages) - 40%
