Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course discusses a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of (in)security in political science, international relations, and security studies. Students will be familiarized with a critical understanding of gendered (in)securities as a diverse range of societal issues and processes, such as armed conflict, militarism, urban development and sports mega-events.
We will tackle the complex relations between the theoretical perspectives put forward by different schools of critical (feminist) security studies and address the methodological challenges that arise from different understandings of (in)security on the basis of empirical examples.
The seminar is divided into two sections: 1. guided reading, presentation and discussion of core texts to develop the theoretical and methodological foundations; 2. development, presentation and implementation of students’ own research concepts. This process is accompanied by feedback from the group and the course leaders.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

• weekly written assignments and presentation of readings (25%)
• presentation of research exposé and peer feedback (25%)
• written seminar paper (35%)
• active participation in small group discussions and in the plenary (15%)
attendance is mandatory: maximum of 2 sessions can be missed

The plagiarism software "Turnitin" is used in this course.

Please note: The 12 ECTS for this research seminar correspond to approximately 300 hours of work.
