Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will ignore the 'war of words' (Mudde 1996) on western Europe's radical right- parties in favour of a more dispassionate theoretical and empirical analysis. Drawing in particular on the insights of the comparative study of political parties, it is expected that it will address the following themes:
" Competing definitions and historical comparisons
" Origins / Genesis
" Voters of the radical right
" Socio-economic explanations
" Institutional explanations
" Supply-side explanations
" Party system impact of radical right parties
" Policy impact of radical right parties
" Impact of incumbency on radical right parties themselves
" Response of established parties to radical right-wing party incumbency
" Right-wing radical parties and democracy

Organisation
" In the first session there will be an introduction to the seminar and students will be allocated specific topics.
" During the two teaching blocks (Blockveranstaltungen) of 12 & 13 December 2008 and 16 & 17 January 2009, students will undertake oral presentations using PowerPoint or overhead slides. Those presentations will then be discussed by the group.
" Three weeks prior to the teaching session at which they are to undertake their oral presentation, students must submit a first draft of their seminar paper to kurt-richard.luther@univie.ac.at. These drafts should at a minimum contain a research question; a literature review; a proposed structure and a list of relevant reading (not merely compiled from the seminar document). Students will then be told on which aspect of their seminar paper topic their oral presentation should focus.
" Electronic files containing the presentations must be submitted four days prior to the presentation. (This will probably be via the seminar's e-learning pages, but that will be determined later.)
" A seminar paper of 18-20 sides (excluding the title page and list of contents) must be submitted (to kurt-richard.luther@univie.ac.at) by one of the two following deadlines: 31 January 2009, or 31 March 2009. There will be no subsequent opportunity to submit the seminar paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

" Active participation in seminar discussions is required.
" One third of the seminar grade will derive from seminar participation and oral presentation, which must be undertaken in English.
" The remaining two thirds of the seminar grade will be based on the seminar paper, which must also be submitted in English.
" Anyone who is absent from more than two of the 90-minute sessions will be unable to successfully complete the seminar
