Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar will start with a discussion of the European integration process in historical perspective. Different theories of regional integration e.g. functionalism, neofunctionalism, federalism, intergouvernmentalism, supranationalism will be introduced to explain processes, including stagnation, and structures of European integration.
Having focused on the European integration process itself, the second part of the seminar takes a more comparative approach. In order to define the characteristics of the European Union as a model sui generis, the integration process will be compared to other examples for regional cooperation and regional integration as Mercosur, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization or ASEAN.
Apart from those institutionalized forms of cooperation/integration, more theoretical discussions - how the European experience is perceived by other states or regional communities of states and whether or not the European Union can serve as abstract model for regional integration - will also be analysed. Starting point for this discussion will be the "New Year Address" of the Taiwanese President Chen Shuibian, who referred to the EU as orientation model for integration of mainland China and Taiwan.
