Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Colonialism and international migration have led to the situation that most societies today are culturally diverse. Immigrant groups often make religious and cultural claims. Most European societies have responded by developing multifarious public policies aimed at regulating and accommodating these groups' traditions. It has been pointed out that recognition of minority claims may be at the expense of the rights of women. This seminar focuses on some paradigmatic cases of supposed conflict between gender equality and cultural diversity, e.g. the Islamic headscarf, female genital cutting, forced marriage and sex selective abortion. These cases raise difficult questions. Can we judge other cultures? Don't we apply double standards? Many of the discussed traditions are performed by women on women, as in the case of female genital cutting. It is women also that ask for a sex selective abortion. If we are not willing to see these women as merely victims of their culture, how then are we to consider their moral autonomy? In this seminar we will therefore consider the complexities of women's autonomy in contexts of power and culture that entail severe constraints.
