Cultural and religious diversity is no longer celebrated. It is recognized that minority groups sometimes discriminate against some of their members, like women or homosexuals. This raises the question, to borrow the words of Eisenberg and Spinner-Halev ((2005): "To what extent and under what circumstances should the liberal state accommodate minority groups which discriminate or appear to mistreat some of their own members?" When is intervention justified? And what intervention? Different authors have developed idealtypical models of how a liberal democratic state can deal with cultural and religious diversity. In the programme students will get acquainted with their ideas, with special attention for the implications of their ideas for minority group women. As multicultural societies do not only exist in the ideal, but also in reality, the idea is to confront these ideals about how diverse societies can be organised with the practices that have been developed in different European countries.
