Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to give an introduction to the relationship between media and politics.
Media and politics are two complex systems, which correlate in different areas and have a substantial impact on society. The study of media and politics focuses on questions of power, rights, processes and actors, issues ultimately connected to the study of democracy and citizenship.
Students will gain advanced knowledge and skills to analyse information and theoretical perspectives into the following topics critically:

• Media, Politics, Democracy
• Media governance
• Media and political campaigns
• Media and citizenship
• European public sphere
• Freedom of expression and media and limitations
• European and global standards: access to information, ownership rules
• Public service media in Europe
• European dimensions of media and politics
• Political communication

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written Exam: combined THERES module exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims of the course
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Critically analyse the mechanisms of media policy-making and media governance.
• Gain advanced knowledge of the trends and debates on media policy and governance on Austrian, European and global levels.
• Develop sophisticated understandings of the relation between media, power relations and democracy.
• Critically identify and select areas of scientific research on media policy-making and media governance for future research.
