Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar has two main objectives: learning how to do an empirical research and preparing yourself for an academic career. You will work on your own research projects. At the beginning of the class, the students will look for a research gap and think about possible individual projects. Later, the students will work on defining constructs and developing items for these. Secondly, they will have to search for theories important for their topics. The students will also have to work in a statistical package in order to calculate the assigned values. Eventually, the students might split into groups in order to test their initial ideas. In groups, they will develop research questions and hypotheses, in order to start doing more serious statistical analyses. Final report has to be handed in on the last day of the class.

Note: the syllabus is still in development. There might be changes to the final course outline.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

• To help the students identify a research gap
• To teach the students how to define constructs and items belonging to them
• To go through all necessary steps in an empirical research
• To enable students for a future independent research through simulating a class research
• To teach the students how to test theories of the Communication Sciences empirically
• To introduce students to selected major areas of research in this field as carried out within the Department of Communication, as well as kindred areas of the Field of Communication Research.
• To make students capable of performing statistical tests relevant for the field
• To simulate a real academic research in group work
• To help students cultivate scholarly skills, ethical norms, awareness of funding possibilities, the art of teaching and academic service – that is, academic craftsmanship.
