Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

During the semester, we will be reading the opus magnum of late Bourdieu,
Pascalian Meditations. Our goal for the semester will be to find a common analytic logic underlying the plethora of concepts, theories and epistemology of Pierre Bourdieu, as well as his relations to, and influences on, contemporary social theory. Pascalian Meditations can be regarded as the third and last monograph (after "Outline of a Theory of Practice" and "The Logic of Practice") in which Bourdieu presented a synthesis of more than 40 years of his empirical and theoretical engagements with forms of social inequality in the world.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The general aim of this reading seminar is to get a better and deeper understanding of the concepts, theories and epistemology underlying the work of Pierre Boudieu, by which he has contributed to the development of contemporary social theory (habitus, social field, doxa, symbolic power, theory of practice, reflexivity, etc...). The primary goal of the course is, however, to enable ourselves to apply these concepts and theories in our own empirical or theoretical research.
