This semester's lecture focuses on the 'material turn' in the analysis of KTC. Particular emphasis is placed on the descriptive analysis of material practices of culture, their intelligible enactment in situ and knowledge/technology-related implications ex situ. Examples are taken from both technical and ordinary settings, in scientific as well as artistic contexts (among others, tbc).
Methodologically, the lecture draws upon ethnographic, ethnomethodological and video analytic approaches of topical relevance to STS (science and technology studies). The analytic emphasis will be on 'cultures in action' and on the consequential deployment of material resources towards practical, performative and political ends.
Conceptually, the lecture discusses various notions of 'culture', ranging from representational and cognitive ones to material and praxiological alternatives. The distinction between procedural and substantive knowledge 'know how' and 'know that' (Ryle 1949) will be of pivotal importance for appraising the current 'material turn' in and for the outlined analysis of KTC.
