Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this seminar, we will explore how STS theories, concepts, and methods have been brought to bear on the city as a complex and dynamic object of study, and as an important site of socio-technical, cultural, and political life. Our collective exploration will focus on three main 'routes' of STS in the city, each shaped by specific academic traditions, intellectual concerns and empirical sensibilities. While we will speak of 'routes' to avoid a historical periodization of these engagements, each of which maintains its actuality, within and across the heterogeneous fields of STS and urban studies. At specific points, we also show that the avenues do not run parallel to each other but intersect, sparking moments of creative and critical tension.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will consist of 12 sessions hold in 4 weeks: one introductory session, 10 text-based discussion sessions and one final concluding session. Apart from obligatory readings in preparation for each text-based session, each student will a) write two reaction papers to obligatory readings and upload it to a blog or intranet teaching platform 24 hours before the corresponding session, and b) make a 10 minutes presentation of one complementary reading. For each thematic block students will have only one assignment.
