Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Who really makes knowledge, and who's rewarded for it? What different kinds of visible and invisible work go into a publication and how are they differently valued?

These questions are central to the course Reading between the lines: A critical view on values and work in scientific publishing, where students are encouraged to rethink assumptions we take for granted, both as individuals and as society.

The course will give insight into practical and ethical dimensions of knowledge production and dissemination. Our focus will be on issues surrounding authorship, publication, and funding of research. We will be dealing with both empirical and theoretical material - so you will not only learn about exploitation, conflict and cooperation in research, but also about how we can understand and analyse these cases. The course employs the analytical lense of valuation studies, but also draws on concepts such as visibility and labour.

To develop a thorough comprehension of the curse’s topics, we expect you to read the selected texts and participate in discussions around these texts. We don't aim to just lecture each other, but rather to engage with the material actively - criticising, supplementing and developing ideas together. The course also gives you the opportunity to present one or several readings for a specific unit and guide the discussion.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This class is a discussion-oriented seminar. The goal is to facilitate understanding and discussion, and encourage independent thinking and inquiry. Students are expected to be present in class, to read the literature and actively participate in discussions.

Read the relevant literature prior to coming to class, and prepare a reading card on the assigned readings: A reading card is an important preparation for the class discussions and the seminar paper. It consists of three parts: (i) a short summary of the assigned readings by noting the central question(s) and argument(s), (ii) focused analysis of a chosen concept/term from each reading (iii) formulation of at least one question relating to the text. It should ideally comprise 750 words. The deadline for each reading card is Tuesday midnight before the seminar unit and it has to be uploaded to Moodle.

Presentation on obligatory reading(s) in one unit: Depending on the number of participating students, presentations will be done either individually or as a group. We expect you to kick off and guide the discussion and reflect on core themes and ideas.

Write a seminar paper: The final assignment of the seminar is a 3000-3500 word essay to be written until 15.02.2023. Topics for the paper have to be developed in the course of the seminar. The aim of this paper is to integrate the obligatory readings and the wider STS literature in a coherent piece of writing with a specific focus/question on one or several of the issues covered. Part of this task is to upload a sketch for the seminar paper before midnight on January 22, 2023 to Moodle.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grading Scheme

The grading scheme is based on a total of 100 points. These points will be awarded in relation to students’ performance in meeting the course learning aims in the different obligatory tasks.

The maximum number of points to be acquired for each task is:
Active in-class-participation incl. reading cards: 30 points, assessed individually, feedback by lecturer upon request
Presentation of reading(s) and moderation of discussion: 20 points, assessed as group, feedback by lecturer upon request
Seminar paper: 50 points, assessed individually, feedback by lecturer

100-89 points Excellent (1)
88-76 points Good (2)
77-63 points Satisfactory (3)
62-50 points Sufficient (4)
49-0 points Unsatisfactory (5) (fail)

A minimum of 50 points is necessary to successfully complete the course. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic work may result in a deduction of points. Absences of four hours at maximum are tolerated, provided that the lecturer is informed about the absence. Absences of up to eight hours in total may be compensated by either a deduction of grading points or/and extra work agreed with the lecturer.

Absences of more than eight hours in total cannot be compensated.
Whether compensation is possible is decided by the lecturer. All requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course.

If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarising parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as ‘not assessed’ and will be entered into the electronic exam record as ‘fraudulently obtained’. Self-plagiarism, particularly reusing own work handed in for other courses, will be treated likewise.
