Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course offers an opportunity to explore practices of writing and representing in the context of the ideas and theories of Science and Technology Studies (STS). We will engage with the history and nature of writing in the sciences, discussions as to ‘good’ academic writing, and arguments for the need to go beyond academic genres and text-based representations to include visual, aural, multimodal, and creative methods in scholarly communication. A large part of the course will comprise experimentation with different exercises, representational practices, and small independent research projects. The course therefore places a high value on students’ own analyses and critical reflections, as well as on willingness to actively engage with the formats and techniques under discussion.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

To pass the seminar, students are expected to complete the following tasks:
- Actively participate in class discussion and in group work;
- Carry out two assignments (one involving literature research, the other focusing on a small empirical investigation) as part of a group, and present these in class;
- Carry out one individual assignment (exact format to be confirmed with the teacher).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation: 10%
Group assignments: 50%
Individual assignment: 40%

To successfully complete the course, a weighted average of at least 4,5 is required. Failure to meet the
attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic
work may also be considered in the course assessment.
