Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
After the introductory meetings, groups will be formed based on the method of interest. Within groups this method should be explored via the means of a common research project. Every group should try out the method they choose (in the form of a small research project or experiments), inform themselves about the theoretical background of the method and its history and, if possible, conduct some field work/ analysis.
Therefore, each group will be supported by one of the seminar leaders. Seminar leaders will provide some conceptual input on a specific methodology at the beginning of the course that can provide some orientation for students. Students are free to choose any method but should coordinate with their support. The seminar sessions will be used for short inputs into methods in general, discussions and experiments but will also always include time to work in the group on the group project. Seminar leaders help groups in completing their group tasks by giving feedback and input.
During the semester each group should provide one status update. These updates can be used to inform about the current progress, and the insights the group gained. They can also include praxis elements with the whole class.
At the end of the semester each group is invited to present their work. All groups can prepare one presentation for the presentation session and an online information page on the wiki, but neither is compulsory.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
All contributions to the seminar have to be handed in by the 22nd of February. However, extensions of 5 days can be given to all students who need them. Please let us know via email if you need those extension days. Longer extensions in case of illness or other hindering circumstance can be discussed via email as well.
Attendance
Please note: If you miss the first session of the course unexcused, you will be automatically de-registered.
Attendance is compulsory. Students can miss up to 20% of the class without negative consequences (2 sessions).
We expect that students will participate in class when they can but understand that not everyone is able to participate in every class. Therefore, students can participate online as well.
This course is based on group work and therefore needs everyone to participate in this collective process. Please make sure that you can contribute to the work of your group. Please stay in contact with your group even if you cannot make it to class and inform them beforehand.Requirements
To pass the class students will have to fulfill at least two of the tasks during the semester (1- 4) and one of the tasks at the end of the semester (5-7). If students want to have a “Sehr gut -1” at least one additional task is required. This means that no student is required to hand in all tasks.
1. COMPULSORY Participation in Class (Individual)
2. Reading Notes (Individual) – upload until 22.02.2026
3. Research Journal (Individual) – upload until 22.02.2026
4. Status Updates (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible) – in one of the classes between November an January
5. Presentation (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible) – 15.01.2026 or 22.06.2026
6. Wiki Page (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible) – until 22.02.2026
7. Writing a reflection paper (Individual) – until 22.02.2026It would be great if we had one Status update, one Presentation and one Wiki Page per Group. Please make sure to communicate with each other and team up as it will not be possible to hand in two Status Updates/Presentations/Wiki Pages on the same project. No group is required do all three of these tasks, but it would be great for the structure of the course.

Prüfungsstoff
We want to understand what ideas are behind different methods. We ask which theoretical history those methods are connected to and how they can be adapted to fit other theories. Therefore, engagement with the chosen method is necessary to pass this course.
Students will have to fulfill at least two of the tasks during the semester (1- 4) and one of the tasks at the end of the semester (5-7). If students want to have a “Sehr gut -1” at least one additional task is required. This means that no student is required to hand in all tasks.During the semester
1. Participating in Class (Individual)
This includes attending classes and contributing to the discussions.
2. Reading notes (Individual)
As a preparation for class students can hand in reading notes on the required literature. These notes should reflect your way of engaging with the material and will not be assessed content-wise.
3. Research Journal (Individual)
To reflect on your process a research journal can be written throughout the semester. We recommend this practice. In case you want your research journal to be counted as on of the tasks for the course assessment please hand it in on moodle at the end of the semester. Creative forms of research journaling are encouraged.
4. Status Updates (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible)
Each group is asked to prepare one status update within the semester. This should include a short overview of their status quo and can otherwise be used for whatever the group finds helpful. Groups that need ‘participants’ for trying their method could use their status update to include the whole group in trying the method, other groups could use the time to discuss questions that they came across in their research. In general, these status updates are about learning together and getting and idea of the other projects not about assessment.End of semester:
5. Presentation (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible)
At the end of the semester each group is asked to prepare a 15-minute presentation on their method, their field work and to share the knowledge they gained.
6. Wiki Page (Can be done individually or with multiple members of the group – just one per group is possible)
To collect the information collected by each group and share it with other people we propose creating a wiki page at the STS Wiki. This page can contain information, literature, tips, ideas, stories or an online-course – choose whatever form of presentation fits sour method and your group.
7. Writing a reflection paper (Alone)
Students will have to fulfill at least two of the tasks during the semester (1- 4) and one of the tasks at the end of the semester (5-7). Wanda Melina Perner: wanda.melina.perner@univie.ac.at, Fabian: fabian.seiser@univie.ac.at, Mike: a12323509@unet.univie.ac.at, Jonas: a12340426@unet.univie.ac.atThe seminar “Expanding the toolbox“ should make room for experimental social science methods that can be used for STS research. Methods should be tried and practiced. We also want to understand them in a broader context and reflect on their implications. We understand methods as being embedded in certain histories. They were developed within certain theoretical fields and specific research context. We want to reflect on these histories and how to connect methods to other theories and fields. What stays the same and what might need to be adapted? Which ideas and fields can(not) be researched with this method?
After discussions about ethical research and social science research in general we will present a few methods. In groups, students will then choose a methods and spend the rest of the course working on it. They are asked to try the method and inform themselves about its history and implications. Difficulties or questions arising can be discussed in class. We will also try out parts of different methods together to get a feeling for different techniques. The idea of this seminar is to provide a safer space for learning and experimenting with new and alternative social science methods. Students are expected to commonly discuss and create a learning environment that suits everyone’s needs. Teaching should happen in a combination of input sessions prepared by the lecturers, input by students and open spaces to work on group projects. This course will be held in English. This means that class discussions and provided literature will be in English. However, English should not be a barrier that stops someone from taking this course. Alternative literature can be found in other languages in case it is needed. For classroom discussion we can work with whisper translation and similar approaches.
We invite students to actively search for literature in other languages and share their different insights and understandings. The aim of this course is to get familiar with new methods for STS and social sciences as a whole. It should be based on shared learning and discussions, and we want to structure it as accessible as possible. We will spend some time within our first session to agree on a structure and some basic rules to make the sessions agreeable to all of us.
Please let us know beforehand if your mobility is limited so we can make sure to save you one of the easily accessible seats (as sadly not all seats in the seminar room can be easily accessed). Feel free to contact us if you need any other accommodation.Names and Pronouns
It is important to us that everyone is addressed by the name and pronouns they are most comfortable with. We will make an introductory round in the first session in which everyone can introduce themselves and ask everyone to try and remember how to address the others. In case you don’t remember – please ask. If your preferred pronouns or name changes feel free to let us know as well.
We would like to be addressed as
- Wanda (she/her or they/them)
- Fabian (he/him/none)
- Mike (he/him)
- Jonas (he/him)
